Self-Direction is a program provided by Office for People With Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD) to help people with disabilities obtain supports and services to lead a more independent and fulfilling life. People who self direct have the choice to choose Self-Hired support staff, classes, activities and scheduling they would like that fits their needs. The program focuses on a Person Center Planning (PCP) approach which involves individual with disabilities working with their Circle of Support team to gain control of their own services. The individual who participate must be eligible for OPWDD services and enrolled in Home and Community Based Services (HCBS) to receive these benefits.

Yes, absolutely! Joining Self-Direction is free through the State of New York with Office With People for Developmental Disabilties (OPWDD).

To get started in receiving related services and supports through OPWDD, you must first see if you are eligible for the program.

Parents know how crucial it is for a child to obtain service during their development. As a friend, I have seen and witnessed many parents struggle through getting support, and related services for their neurodivergent child. Even when parents had support many times that “support” was unheard, unseen and out of reach when parents needed it most. I have felt sadness in watching children grow without the services needed because their parents were not able to obtain services. I have felt anger at not being qualified or able to help in a meaningful way other than to be a silent ear for parents to vent to.
I have decided to gain the qualifications needed to be an authorized Support Broker with OPWDD. As a launch specialist I am finally able to direct parents on how to obtain resources, support staff and related services for their child. I plan to get as many neurodiverse children into as many related services as possible.
I am a NYC Parent Ally.
